"Brain rot" was named the Oxford Word of the Year for 2024.
‘Brain rot’ is defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration”.
These days, Gen X, Gen Z, Gen Alpha all these generations are addicted to ‘Reels’ in social media. Why?
Because it gives them unlimited entertainment with all kinds of videos on various topics. Small kids are also getting so fascinated with some of the stupid content of these Reels that sometimes as a parent it becomes difficult for us to answer their queries on few Adult topics which they might have encountered in any of the ‘Reels’.
These overwhelming creation of ‘Reels’ on social media are influencing kids and young generations so much that they are getting addicted to smartphones which is impacting their mental health, physical health and interpersonal skills. I have seen children watching ‘Reels’ together with their friends, discussing its content with great enthusiasm whereas getting diverted from their main focus i.e. studies, play, extra-curricular activities, enjoying their childhood, etc.
It's wrong to blame only our younger generation for this habit. We as an adult also get indulged in these online contents so much the young kids gets influenced to do the same.
Over time, brain rot contributes to memory difficulties, disorganization, poor decision-making, and a decline in mental health.
Hence, it's important for us to spend our quality time by doing other activities like playing, exercise, music, meditation, reading and pursuing our hobby. Even connecting with friends and family at a physical location is important rather than being connected by social media.
Our health is our priority and we should not ruin it through these digital contents and platform.
